Latrodectus geometricus
a female in South Carolina
The Brown Widow, below, is not as dangerous as other members of the genus Latrodectus. Found worldwide in
warmer areas including the southern USA, it usually becomes abundant where established. Its webs are
seen commonly on buildings, especially those that are well-lighted at night like convenience stores
that attract a large variety of nocturnal insects. Its colors and patterns are quite variable.
