In the American southwest and northern Mexico, numerous "sky islands" rise above the surrounding desert. These are mountainous areas, isolated from one another, yet all receive enough rain to sustain green forests at high
 elevations, each having some unique plants and animals. The sheet-web spider shown here is an example.
